10 Valentine’s Day Gifts for Nomadic Couples
Ahh, Valentine’s Day. Drug stores are exploding with pink, Drew Barrymore movies are playing nightly, and Michael Bolton jams are literally always playing. All of this mushy nonsense and yet every year when February 14th hits you can still see the panicked looks on the faces of shoppers as they fight over the last grungy stuffed animal at the grocery store. Remembering V-day can be difficult enough, never mind finding a gift that is actually meaningful. As travellers, we are typically trained not to waste money on useless trinkets for occasions like this, especially if we find ourselves away from home. Luckily, I’ve done all of the dirty work for you so that you can nail Valentine’s this year and look like a real smooth operator- without busting your budget!
1. Stink Good
It does’t matter if you’ve been travelling out of a backpack for months and look like a dirt ball. If the two of you are going out for a dinner and drinks on the town, smelling nice is always a courtesy to your partner (and fellow diners). These tiny travel bottles take up no room in your bag but make a world of a difference!
2. A Twist on a Classic
Buying jewelry for Valentine’s doesn’t mean it needs to be dripping in diamonds and cost you a second mortgage. These travel-themed necklaces are adorable and not flashy, which is perfect for a backpacker. They’ll also remind your lady of you and what she gets to come home to when she’s off adventuring.
These are perfect for when the two of you want to take off for a weekend without having to use all of of your trunk space. I just bought my boyfriend the S-Zone bag and he loves it, even though he took the “weekender” as a light suggestion and turned it into a “two-weeker.” The only catch with this gift is that your squeeze will probably now be expecting you to whisk them away on romantic weekend getaways. Sorry, not my problem.
4. Retro Postcard Prints
Instead of ordering a generic piece of travel art, frame a print from a place where you guys had an amazing time traveling together. Not only do they look insanely cool, but you’ll get tons of brownie points for remembering a special time in your relationship. Good for you, Casanova.
5. Leather Bound Journal
I’ve never said this about stationary, but this journal is sexy. This looks like what a tortured poet would use to write to his star-crossed lover. But seriously, travel journals are awesome for any traveller and a lot of people don’t use them unless one is literally put into their hands (myself included). Plus, if it’s anything like the journal I kept in middle school, it will be incredibly hilarious to look back on later.
6. Snazzy Snaps
Patience is a virtue, but I don’t have any. That’s why I love these funky vintage polaroid cameras, which give you a hard copy of your photos instantly. If you guys ever need to part ways for your own respective journeys, it’s nice being that couple that keeps photos of each other on hand, even if your friends tease you relentlessly for it.
7. Snazzy Snaps Holder
So you’re loving the new camera, but your house/beach hut/tent/camper van is now overflowing with your travel photos. These adorable clothesline frames can hang anywhere and are perfect for hanging the best memories from your last trip, or inspiration for the next one!
8. Private Bank
Now every time you guys skip the over-priced tapas restaurant for date night, you’ll have a place to store the cash and praise yourself for being fiscally responsible. Saving together will make that next date night so much more rewarding, especially when it’s eating sushi in Tokyo or clinking mugs at Oktoberfest!
9. Experience Gift Card
Giving your S.O. a gift card to Walmart says that you have given up. Giving them a gift card for a romantic gondola ride in Venice means that you are something straight out of the romance novel she would have used the gift card for. Tinggly creates gift cards for all kinds of romantic experiences in Europe, whether it’s a boat ride by the Eiffel Tower or a wine tasting tour in Bordeaux.
10. For the Lone-Wolf
Because it’s 2017 and you don’t need no man’s shoulder to sleep on. So go ahead, treat yourself and buy that novelty airplane pillow you’ve been eying up. Functional? Yes. Hilarious? YES.
Remember, a romantic gesture doesn’t have to rip into your travel budget or take up all of the room in your suitcase. These are just a few options that will show your nomadic S.O. that they’re on your mind
